The Mews
Sheffield Hallam University
Set within the grounds of Victorian Villas with the Collegiate Campus, the Mews building provides a new teaching facility for Sheffield Hallam University.
The Design
The design created a ‘courtyard environment’ where the plan form has a clear ‘back’ and front due to the cross falls on the site of some 3m.
The lecture theatre, toilets and plant room facilities could therefore be located at ground level incorporating the retained walls while the remaining teaching spaces enjoy the views of the mature landscape setting.
The Outcome
The new element of the building, sat on the footprint of a demolished squash court is surrounded by large mature trees. The materials and form of the building reflect this setting, with cedar cladding and brise soleil used with ashlar stone that reflects the stone of the mews building and surrounding villas.
