Royal Mail Centre

Sheffield

The Brief

Royal Mail have a long history with Race Cottam and of all the projects undertaken with this client the most prestigious was the Sheffield Mail Centre.

The brief was to create an architectural solution to establish Royal Mail’s modern culture and to help regenerate Sheffield’s Don Valley as a centre for commerce.

The Design

Situated in the heart of the Lower Don Valley on a prominent site, the project proved a complex challenge.

The site falls were exploited to form a lower ground level providing visitor access directly off Brightside Lane, with an upper ground floor providing 13,000 square metres of clear working environment housing the latest integrated mail processing machines. The top floors provide spacious staff office facilities overlooking the sorting area as well as dining areas and a fitness suite with panoramic valley views.

The Outcome

The architectural form of the building has been acclaimed a quality addition to Sheffield fulfilling the Royal Mail’s requirement for a modern functional building with exceptional sensitive design and construction.
