Barnsley Institute of Technology
Situated within Barnsley town centre conservation area, a new Institute of Technology facility has been created within Barnsley College to provide dedicated specialist learning spaces for a range of courses within engineering, manufacturing and construction.
The Brief
The existing college courtyard has been refurbished and infilled to create a new atrium, housing a Learning Resource Centre with tiered mezzanine floors.
The Design
Collaboration was at the heart of the ethos of the Institute of Technology and the new atrium provides not only connection to the specialist IoT teaching facilities, but also bespoke areas for flexible and collaborative learning.
The former external existing windows and brick walls have been retained and remain exposed internally.
External alterations sees the existing main east and south entrances sensitively improved given the historical significance of the building. Accessibility has also been brought up to date.
The Outcome
Barnsley Institute of Technology opened on September 2025, supporting collaboration, innovation and specialist learning.
