Proud to be on Site: Healthcare

It’s all hands on deck here at Race Cottam Associates. With so many projects on site we wanted to introduce you to a trio of healthcare schemes all well underway and tell you a little bit about them and how they’re getting on.

Bakewell Health Hub

This scheme for the Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust in Bakewell is set to provide the essential health care services for the local community. Essential services are to be re-provided in a modern, flexible, multi-use health centre. Working alongside the Peak District National Park Authority Cultural Heritage Team, RCA extensively used the Peak Park Design Guide to shape the overall design. Particular emphasis was given to the traditional gable end form alongside references to historic features such as small parapet upstands to roofs, and contemporary interpretations of window and quoin detailing.

Work began on site in late 2022 with main contractor Kier. We are particularly proud of all the effort that has gone into the stonework across the exterior of the building. The building was handed over at the end of August, ready to open as an operational ambulance station and for community-based outpatient care on Monday 23rd September.

Belper

We are delivering a two-storey outpatient health centre on the site of Babington Hospital in Belper Town Centre. The new health centre will improve the quality of the environment for patients and staff while enabling the rationalisation of the estate for the Derbyshire Community Health Services NHS Foundation Trust.

Throughout design and development, there has been collaboration with the Local Planning Authority, Historic England, and the Conservation team. The site lies within the Belper conservation area, adjacent to a listed building and within the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World heritage site.

The site also lies within Flood Zone 3, and we have liaised with the Environmental Agency to establish flood resilience in the building design and site amendments such as strategic land remodelling.

Henry Brothers have recently been appointed as main contractor, with an imminent start on site.

Olive Lane

This new two storey new build health centre in Waverley will provide essential primary healthcare services in an easily accessible location, situated near other proposed local amenities as part of the wider masterplan. The site lies within the heart of Rotherham, forming part of the new Olive Lane High Street. The site is adjacent to new housing developments, with the new high street linking the residential and advanced manufacturing areas of the site.

The design sits in a strong material context of brick, making reference to the high street being developed at the same time to create a fully coherent scheme. The centre is expected to serve 6,000 residents.

Sustainability has been a key concept from the inception of the scheme and the centre will achieve BREEAM Excellent as part of NHS new build requirements.

Main contractor Lindum started on site in February with an expected completion date of November 1st 2024.
