Race Cottam were appointed by North Lincolnshire Council to investigate alternative uses for the vacant former North Lincolnshire Council Civic Centre. The selected option for repurposing the building was as a new University College.
The Brief
Working with Rider Levitt Bucknall a series of options were investigated for this Grade II Listed 1960’s brutalist building, set in extensive grounds of Central Park Scunthorpe. Extensive stakeholder engagement was used to formulate the brief and zones for the building that best used the existing spaces.
The Design
The former council chamber became the new lecture theatre with other mayoral rooms changed to LRC, coffee shop and social spaces, with the 5-storey office wing changed to special and general teaching spaces and staff facilities. Informal meeting and study zones were created to soften the ‘council office’ feel.
The Outcome
The project from concept to completion was achieved in 18 months. The distinctive building has created a strong identity for the UCNL and the facility has been an immediate success with students.
