Sheffield Hallam University

Back to Education Sector

Race Cottam have radically transformed the former 1960s YMCA site in the sensitive conservation area of Broomhall, to create the home for the university’s health & social care courses.  Sheffield Hallam University describe it as ‘a jewel in the crown of the Collegiate Crescent Campus’.

The Brief

Much of the existing buildings were demolished to make way for two new four storey office wings built around a landscaped courtyard and central circulation core. The only retained building was the gymnasium which has been successfully converted into a large lecture theatre and teaching spaces.

The Design

The principal elevation mixes random coursed stone and ashlar stone walling creating a modern yet sensitive contemporary appearance in this Victorian suburb of Sheffield.

The Outcome

This teaching facility replicates a workplace environment for the students, set out as it would be in a hospital. Facilities include a digital x-ray suite, operating theatre and a gym.

This unique facility has been hailed as “the place to be” for tomorrow’s healthcare professionals by the University Chancellor, Lord Winston, and “a beacon for the future of health and social care education” by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.
