Oakwell Centre, Kendray Hospital

Barnsley

Back to Health Sector

A commission by Kier Northern on behalf of Barnsley Primary Care Trust led to us designing The Oakwell Centre, a new Mental Health Unit at Barnsley’s Kendray Hospital site.

The Brief

A key client requirement was to maximise open space and natural light, to enhance the internal environment and aid natural ventilation.

The Design

We adopted a contemporary approach to the design of the two new 15-bed wards, plus a six-bed PICU and a therapy and administration area.

This extended to the exterior of the new building whose main elevations feature bay windows set into through-coloured render.

The Outcome

The open spaces between the ward buildings contrast hard landscaping with softer, planted areas plus subtle external night lighting. These elements provide important benefits by allowing patients access to attractive external spaces and use the spaces to engage in therapeutic activities.
