NLWA EcoPark South

Edmonton

Back to Energy & Waste Sector

Race Cottam Associates were appointed as part of the Waterman Group and Taylor Woodrow team to deliver the Ecopark South phase of the North London Waste Authority’s (NLWA) plan for a £1.2bn sustainable waste management hub at Edmonton EcoPark South.

The Brief

North London Waste Authority (NLWA) is one of the largest waste authorities in the UK and has created a new facility across three buildings that will increase recycling rates and invest in a sustainable future for the local communities.

The Design

The new facility will have the capacity to recycle 135,000 tonnes of waste every year, including wood, metals, and plastic that would otherwise be sent to landfill. The Resource Recovery Facility (RRF) will serve two functions: one half will operate as a Recycling and Fuel Preparation Facility (RFPF), while the other will be transformed into a public Reuse and Recycling Centre (RRC).For the first time ever, residents and businesses will be able to drop off both recyclable and non-recyclable waste directly at the EcoPark.

Complementing this, EcoPark House has been delivered as a two-storey outreach and community hub, providing local people with opportunities to learn about waste reduction and recycling. The building also serves as the new home for the Edmonton Sea Cadets, who benefit from its prime location along the River Lee Navigation.

The Outcome

Race Cottam developed the concept design by Grimshaw Architects to RIBA stages 4-7.
