Back to Education Sector

The development of the WQE College estate continues with a new extention and significant refurbishment.

The Brief

The existing 1930s C block building is to be refurbished with the addition of a new single storey extension to create a new teaching block. The scheme upgrades the facilities to modern teaching standards as part of the continued remodelling of the sixth form college estate.

The Design

The new extension comprises a contemporary black box with large expanses of glazing and wrap around canopy, ensuring an appealing aesthetic for students and staff, while increased amounts of natural light supports users’ wellbeing.

The new extension aims to acheive the DfE Net Zero carbon targets with enhanced building fabric, air source heat pump, PVs and a biosolar green roof .

As part of the refurbishment works, the existing C block fabric is to be improved whilst being sympathetic to the curtilage listing of the estate.

The Outcome

Due to be completed in Autumn 2024, the new teaching block will enhance WQE’s teaching provision for EFL courses, whilst creating sustainable measures that will contribute to reducing the college’s carbon footprint.
