The Mews, Sheffield Sheffield Hallam University

Set within the grounds of Victorian Villas, the Mews building provides a new teaching facility for Sheffield Hallam University. Surrounded by mature trees, the materials and form of the building reflect this setting, with cedar cladding and brise soleil with ashlar to complement the other villas on the crescent.

Our design aimed to create a ‘courtyard environment’ where the plan form has a clear ‘back’ and ‘front’ due to the cross falls on the site of some 3m. The lecture theatre, toilets and plant room facilities are located at ground level, incorporating the retained walls while the teaching spaces enjoy the views of the mature landscape setting.
