Race Cottam Associates was selected to take part in a competition to masterplan a housing and retail led regeneration scheme in Nottingham by sustainable developer Blueprint Regeneration in collaboration with a major national retailer.
The Brief
Race Cottam’s design focussed on responding to the needs of the local community to create a centre for urban regeneration, whilst also responding to the practical needs of the retailer. The design utilised local typologies and materials to harmonise the scheme with the established local area, whilst creating a lively and welcoming destination based upon the sensory ideas of a modern market.
The Design
The residential scheme provided a series of traditional housing typologies interpreted in a modern way, with each house having its own driveway, front door and garden. The resulting scheme included 28 semi-detached properties and 4 live/work units fronting the busy high-street.
In addition, our response to exemplar sustainable retail development included a naturally ventilated and day lit store, and utilised our knowledge of the environmental sector to encourage a fully integrated lifecycle of the building.
The Outcome
The design was well received at the public consultation event, and whilst the final scheme was not selected for further development, Race Cottam was commended for our innovative ideas and design which was responsive both to the retailer and the community.
