Barnsley Institute of Technology
Situated within Barnsley town centre conservation area, a new Institute of Technology facility is to be created within Barnsley College to provide dedicated specialist learning spaces for a range of courses within engineering, manufacturing and construction.
The Brief
The existing college courtyard will be refurbished and infilled to create a new atrium, housing a Learning Resource Centre with tiered mezzanine floors.
The Design
Collaboration is at the heart of the ethos of the Institute of Technology and the new atrium will provide not only connection to the specialist IoT teaching facilities, but also bespoke areas for flexible and collaborative learning.
The former external existing windows and brick walls will be retained and remain exposed internally.
External alterations will see the existing main east and south entrances be sensitively improved given the historical significance of the building. Accessibility will be brought
up to date.
The Outcome
The same team that delivered the award winning CAPA College are delivering this £6m refurbishment scheme for Barnsley College and Morgan Sindall. We look forward to seeing the end result when completion is due in winter 2024.
