Advanced intra-operative MRI theatres transforms paediatric neurosurgery at Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
This specialist extension for Sheffield Children’s NHS Foundation Trust delivers two advanced operating theatres, including one directly integrated with a pioneering intra-operative 3T MRI suite. The facility enables real-time imaging during neurosurgery, improving precision, reducing repeat procedures, and lowering patient risk.
Designed with child-centred features such as dynamic lighting, wall projections, Ambient Experience Technology and artworks, the scheme enhances patient experience as well as changing the environment for surgeons to reduce fatigue during long procedures. Complex construction within a live hospital required careful coordination to ensure service continuity, and buildability despite significant spatial and technical constraints.
