UTC Leeds Shortlisted for RICS Award 24 Feb 2017

We are delighted to announce that our UTC Leeds scheme has been shortlisted for a RICS Award 2017, in the Yorkshire and Humber Region.  Shortlisted within the Building Conservation category, the scheme transformed a Grade II listed Victorian metal pressing factory into a state-of-the-art educational facility for 14-18 year old engineering students.

The design philosophy was to retain the original building fabric wherever possible, with the removal of recent less sensitive additions.  Where current standards or new use required new or replacement elements, these were proposed in a contrasting contempory style, complementing the original building.  The vision was to create an inspirational space that would celebrate the heritage of the building whilst accommodating the brief through innovative design.  Revealing its working parts allows the building itself to act as a learning aid, illustrating all the complexities of a modern building.

The building is an iconic presence in the manufacturing heart of Leeds, and we are pleased that our design secured the future of this important heritage asset, whilst meeting the needs of our future engineering workforce.

If you would like more information on the scheme, please visit our projects page and blog.
